Kristaps Porzingis, aka the unicorn, has come out on fire after the All-Star break. After stumbling through the first six weeks, the Mavericks have now won 12 of their last 16 games, including 10 when Porzingis has been in the lineup.
Dallas hit the road Saturday night to start a pivotal stretch of games facing Playoff opponents, and the first meant facing the Denver Nuggets. While the game started a little scrappy, the Mavericks quickly took hold and never looked back, grabbing a critical 116-103 road victory.
The unicorn has found some spring rhythm, much like last season, as he looks a little fresher, a little more comfortable with his shot, and it’s beginning to show. In his two appearances since the break, Porzingis is 7-of-12 from the three-point line and led the team in scoring during Saturday nights clash with 25 points. As of February, Porzingis is averaging 22.2 points and 8.8 boards on 51 percent shooting, including 43 percent from 3. And it’s not just offense he’s excelling in. He’s been protecting the rim incredibly well, as he notched up three blocks while facing MVP-candidate Nikola Jokic.
This week, the Mavericks are in a position to shoot up the Western Conference standings. Unfortunately, the road ahead is very tough. They face back-to-back games against the Clippers Monday-Wednesday, who are three and a half games ahead, and the Trail Blazers on Friday-Sunday, who’s one and a half games ahead. Let’s see how this week goes down for Dallas.
Catch you Thursday.
