LaMelo Ball from the Charlotte Hornets is a rookie who has seized his opportunity and grabbed the NBA’s attention with his smooth moves and highlight-reel passes. But the thing that’s surprised us all is his ability to score. Even Hornets owner, and the GOAT himself, Michael Jordan, had some positive words about his rookie.
“I think Melo has adjusted to the NBA game better than any of us ever thought, this early in his career. He has exceeded our expectations so far this season.”
I must admit, this MJ quote is a little old, but I wanted to restate it because Melo is truly impressing everyone, and that’s strange to say because what else would you be expecting from a top-three draft pick? The Hornets are currently fifth in the Eastern Conference after winning five of their last six games. During this stretch, Ball has averaged 20 points per game while shooting 54% from deep and 51% from the field. He also leads all rookies in the NBA in points (15.8), assists (6.3), rebounds (6.0), and steals (1.6) per game. Like death and taxes, LaMelo is a sure thing and is running away with the Rookie of the Year award.
The Hornets have typically been a tough team to follow, but this year things are genuinely different with a stable roster that’s jelling incredibly well and feature players that, in better times, you would pay money to see play, like LaMelo. It’s a long road ahead for this young talent to keep developing, but the potential is there, and everyone can see it.
Catch you Monday.
