Tonight, there’s a big game brewing between the Portland Trail Blazers and the Utah Jazz. These two teams have previously met twice this year and the Jazz have come up winners on both occasions. So its fair to say that Utah may have the Blazers’ number.
The Jazz are playing their best basketball of the season. They have won their last six games, while the Blazers are also coming off back-to-back home wins against the Cavaliers and the Pelicans. Donovan Mitchell and Damian Lillard will both run their respective offenses and put up decent numbers for the game, but if the Blazers want to take this game over, their bench has to step up.
Speaking of the Blazers bench, did you see Friday night’s game against the Pelicans? Their bench went off, especially Jake Layman (pictured). The 6’9” has started only 25 games this season, yet in the last 5 games he’s averaging 14.6 points, shooting 62 percent from the field and 42.1 percent from beyond the arc in just 22.2 minutes. On Friday night against the Pelicans, he scored 20 points in just the second quarter.
The Blazers are currently sitting 4th in the West (28-19) and the Jazz creeping behind at 7th (26-21). Both teams want their hot streaks to keep going, but it will be the bench that determines this game. If Layman can heat up once again, he might be the X-Factor for the Blazers. Enjoy watching tonight, I certainly will.
Catch you Thursday.
