After a 0-6 start to the 2018-19 NBA season, the Cleveland Cavaliers have fired head coach Tyronn Lue. It only took 6 games for ownership to wipe their hands of the coach that co-piloted the team to three straight finals and the franchises first championship.
But, this is a team without LeBron James who moved on to the LA Lakers over the summer. Lue’s departure is an even bigger testament to LeBron’s impact on a team. With LeBron, the Cavs were predicted to be in the Finals nearly every year. Without him, they won’t even make the Playoffs.
President Dan Gilbert and general manager Koby Altman have nothing left to do but move on from the LeBron era. Removing Lue from the team is the first step, but the second step is a lot harder. The team has to be realistic and invest in the future by acquiring future draft picks and taking a chance on young players. Life with LeBron may have had its ups and downs, but as the old Cavs saw and the Heat can tell you now, nothing is tougher than trying to figure out life without him.
With Lue’s firing now, he doesn’t have to sit through an entire season going nowhere and ultimately be fired next summer. He can sit back, relax, and enjoy watching his team transform into the purple and gold.
Catch you Thursday.
